FAQ

What can I do to boost my immune system?

The human body is made up of trillions and trillions of cells. These cells collaborate to create organs, tissues and other functions. Another cell takes its place when a cell dies. Chemical signals, called hormones, allow cells to communicate with each other. All bodily processes are controlled by hormones, including metabolism and immunity.

Hormones, chemicals that are secreted throughout the body by glands, are chemicals. They circulate through the blood stream and act as messengers to regulate how our bodies function. Some hormones come from the body and others from outside.

When a hormone-producing gland releases their contents into the bloodstream, hormone production begins. Once hormones are released they move through the bloodstream until they reach their intended organ. Sometimes hormones stay active for only a short time. Other hormones stay active longer and continue to influence the body's functioning even after they leave the bloodstream.

Some hormones can only be produced in large quantities. Others are made in small quantities.

Some hormones only are produced during certain periods of life. For example, estrogen can be produced during puberty or pregnancy. Estrogen assists women with breast development, bone density, and osteoporosis prevention. Estrogen promotes hair growth, and skin stays soft and smooth.

The recommended daily allowance (RDA), for vitamins, varies depending upon age, gender, or physical condition. RDA values are set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

For adults over 19 years, the RDA is 400 mg per day for vitamin A. Pregnant women require 600 micrograms daily to support fetal development. Children ages 1-8 require 900 micrograms per day. For infants younger than one year, 700 micrograms are required daily. However, this number drops to 500 micrograms each day for children aged 9-12 months.

Children aged between 1-18 years require 800 micrograms of sugar per day, while overweight children need 1000 micrograms. Children who are underweight receive 1200 micrograms every day to meet their nutritional requirements.

Children aged 4-8 years old who have been diagnosed as having anemia require 2200 micrograms of vitamin C per day.

Adults over 50 years of age need 2000 micrograms per day for general health. Because of their higher nutrient needs, women who are pregnant or nursing need 3000 mg per day.

Adults over 70 years of age need 1500 micrograms per day since they lose about 10% of their muscle mass each decade.

Women who are pregnant, nursing or breastfeeding need more than the RDA. Pregnant and breastfeeding women require 4000 micrograms each day during pregnancy and 2500 Micrograms each day after delivery. Breastfeeding mothers need 5000 mg per day when breastmilk is being produced.
