What can be done to increase your immune system's effectiveness?

Human bodies are made up of trillions upon trillions of cells. Each cell works together to create organs and tissues that fulfill specific functions. When one cell dies, another cell replaces it. Chemical signals, called hormones, allow cells to communicate with each other. Hormones regulate all bodily processes, from growth and development to metabolism and immunity.

Hormones refer to chemicals produced throughout the body by glands. They travel through our bloodstream and act as messengers, controlling how our bodies function. Some hormones come from the body and others from outside.

The release of hormones from a hormone producing gland into the bloodstream is the beginning of hormone production. Once hormones have been released, they travel through the body until reaching their target organ. Some hormones may only remain active for a limited time. Other hormones can remain active longer, and they continue to affect the body's functionality even after leaving the bloodstream.

Some hormones can only be produced in large quantities. Others are produced in small amounts.

Some hormones are produced at certain times during life. Estrogen is one example. It's produced in puberty, pregnancy and menopause. Women can get estrogen to build breasts, prevent osteoporosis, and keep their bones healthy. It is also known to promote hair growth and keep skin soft and smooth.

What does "vitamin" actually mean?

Vitamins can be described as organic compounds found in food. Vitamins are essential for our bodies to absorb nutrients from the foods we eat. Vitamins are not made by the body, so they must be obtained through food.

Two types of vitamins exist: water-soluble vitamin and fat-soluble vitamin. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve easily when they are dissolved in water. Vitamin C,B1(thiamine), B2 (2riboflavin), and B3 (3niacin), as well as vitamin C,B1, B2 (riboflavin), and B3 (niacin), vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), vitamin folic acid (biotin), pantothenic, and choline are examples. Fat soluble vitamins are stored in the liver and fatty tissue. Some examples include vitamin D and E, K, A and beta carotene.

Vitamins are classified according their biological activity. There are eight major vitamin groups:

  • A - Essential for healthy growth and health maintenance.
  • C - essential for nerve function and energy generation.
  • D - necessary for healthy bones and teeth.
  • E - needed for good vision and reproduction.
  • K - Essential for healthy muscles and nerves.
  • P - essential for strong bones, teeth and tendons
  • Q – aids digestion of iron and iron absorption
  • R - necessary for making red blood cells.

The recommended daily intake (RDA), of vitamins varies with age, gender and physical condition. RDA values are set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

For adults 19 years and over, the RDA of vitamin A is 400mg per day. Pregnant women require 600 micrograms daily to support fetal development. Children ages 1-8 require 900 micrograms per day. Babies under one-year old require 700 mg per day. Between 9 and 12 years of age, however, this drops to 500 mg per day.

Children aged 1-18 years need 800 micrograms daily, while children overweight require 1000 micrograms per days. Children who are severely obese or underweight will need 1200 micrograms each day.

2200 mg of vitamin A per day is required for children aged 4-8 who have been diagnosed by anemia.

2000 micrograms per person is necessary for general health. Breastfeeding or pregnant women require 3000 micrograms per daily due to higher nutrient demands.

Adults over 70 years of age need 1500 micrograms per day since they lose about 10% of their muscle mass each decade.

Women who are pregnant, nursing or breastfeeding need more than the RDA. Pregnant and breastfeeding women require 4000 micrograms each day during pregnancy and 2500 Micrograms each day after delivery. Breastfeeding moms need 5000 micrograms each day when breastmilk production occurs.
